The Abbott Pandemic Defense Coalition (APDC) is a pioneering alliance of industry leaders and public health experts, united by a mission to identify and contain viral threats before they become global pandemics.
In light of COVID-19’s impact, the urgency to stay one step ahead is clearer than ever. That’s why Abbott partnered with Courageous Studios to create The Virus Hunt, an immersive campaign that follows APDC across four locations—from Chicago to the Amazon rainforest—showing how preventing pandemics truly “takes a village.” Through this journey, audiences see communities, healthcare workers, and labs working together to keep each other safe.
As the lead designer and art director, I crafted a cohesive design system that conveys APDC’s mission across multiple touchpoints: the campaign hub, an interactive article, Q&A, and social ads. Using full-bleed imagery, cinematic scenes, and editorial-style typography, the design centers on human stories, while a dark, stable color palette sets a grounded tone. An animated genomic sequence visually ties the content together, emphasizing the science behind APDC’s work, while Abbott’s signature “energy colors” highlight each location’s unique challenges and resilience.
Ultimately, the campaign reinforces APDC’s core belief in the power of human connections, showing how communities, healthcare workers, and labs worldwide work together to monitor and respond to virus activity in real-time.
